Overview

CAMWS was founded at the University of Chicago in 1905 and incorporated in the State of Missouri on July 13, 1948. Its members (c. 1500) are primarily college and university professors, K-12 teachers, and graduate students whose specialty is Classics: Classical languages (Greek and Latin) and the world of ancient Greece and Rome. An educational, not-for-profit organization, CAMWS is exempt from federal income tax as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The CAMWS region covers 32 midwestern, western, and southern states and three Canadian provinces. CAMWS publishes a quarterly, The Classical Journal (ISSN 0009-8353; circulation c. 2300), an online pedagogical journal, Teaching Classical Languages (twice a year), and a Newsletter (thrice a year). The Annual Meeting of CAMWS takes place in the spring, in late March or early April.

Officials

The Secretary-Treasurer is the chief executive and financial officer of CAMWS and is empowered to act on behalf of the Association. The President serves as Program Chair during his or her year of office. Meetings are held at the invitation of a department of Classics at a university, a college, or (rarely) a secondary school, and a representative from that department chairs the local committee. After a site visit by the Secretary-Treasurer and the negotiation of a contract with a hotel, the Executive Committee of CAMWS must grant its approval.

Meeting

In odd-numbered years the Annual Meeting is held in a northern or western state or in Canada. In even-numbered years it is held in a southern state. The official program lasts from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through 5:30 p.m. Saturday. We are off property on Friday afternoon.

Needs

We require c. 195 sleeping rooms on the two peak nights (Thursday and Friday), c. 150 on Wednesday, and c. 80 on Saturday, for a total of c. 620 room nights. We anticipate c. 450 registrations at a meeting. We need one or two large suites, a board room (20), a room for buffet dining (25-50), a banquet area and/or ballroom (150-200), an area for receptions (75-100), a registration area, a room for exhibits (c. 25 tables), six breakout rooms set up in theater style (two for 100-125, two for 50-75, two for 25-50), audio-visual equipment rental, and adequate on- or off-property dining for attendees, who are on their own for most meals.
