CPL Award for Outstanding Promotional Activity
in the Schools

To support programs and activities in primary and secondary schools, the CAMWS Committee for the Promotion of Latin (CPL) annually recognizes with a plaque and a certificate the group which develops the most outstanding and effective activity for promoting Latin in CAMWS territory during each academic year (including the preceding summer). The winner of this award is announced every spring at the annual CAMWS meeting.

Any group wishing to compete for this award must be sponsored by a current CAMWS member and must submit a letter of application to the CPL chair by February 1, 2013. (Applications for CPL grants may be combined with applications for this award.) The application letter must include a 100-word summary of the project and a more detailed project description not to exceed 500 words in length. Applicants are encouraged to attach supporting materials such as photographs, flyers, pertinent newspaper articles, etc.

2011-2012 CPL Award for Outstanding Promotional Activity in the Schools

This year's winning outreach project was Cheering on the Charlotte Panthers: Roman-Style! by students of Sherri Madden (Master's Academy) in Charlotte, North Carolina.

On December 11, 2011, the middle- and high-school students in Master's Academy Classical Club (MACC) donned togas and ivy wreaths and held a Roman feast in the parking lot to cheer on their city's NFL football team, the Charlotte Panthers. Afterwards they marched into the Bank of America Stadium, yelling Latin cheers and carrying a black-and-teal banner inscribed with "Ite Pantherae"! All of this was captured on film, and the announcement that MACC had been chosen as the "Tailgating Party of the Game" appeared on the Jumbotron during the second quarter of the game. What a great way to spread the word about Latin to over 70,000 fans!

• 2007–2008: Knights of the Tiber Cantors, the Latin Club at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, OH (Stergios Lazos and Daniel Cavoli, sponsors)
• 2006-2007: Latin Enrichment Day, Master's Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina (Sherri Madden, sponsor)
• 2005-2006: Andrew O'Brien at St. Paul's Episcopal School, Metairie, LA, and Stephen L. Pearce at Benjamin Franklin High School, New Orleans, LA (the usual CPL awards were replaced this year by special awards for two high-school Latin programs struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina)
