how archaeology helps reveal the lives of those living in the ancient world
on the fringes of the Roman Empire. Language of instruction is

Middle East Between Rome and Persia: Early Christianity on the
Path to Islam�? – NEH Summer Seminar at U of Notre
Dame (6/19–7/26) (*deadline has passed) 6-week
NEH seminar focusing on the developing character of the Middle
East from the early Christian period to its transition under the
spread of Islam in the 7th century

for Hellenic Studies –
Graduate Student Summer Seminar: The Iliad in the Second Millennium B.C.E.; Washington, DC (7/23–8/11) (*deadline
has passed) This seminar presents a chance to study the oral tradition
and society that informs the Homeric epics while learning how to apply
that knowledge to web publishing for the Homer Multitext Project. Intended
for 1st or 2nd year graduate students with solid
Greek ability. **Note: The
NEH Summer Seminar “Homer's
Readers, Ancient and Modern�? at
U-Michigan has been postponed until 2008. Application materials should
appear by December 2007.
- Summer Course
in Epigraphy –
Ohio State University (7/30–8/10) (*deadline has passed) Taught
by Fritz Graf, this intensive course serves as an introduction to the discipline
for those who are competent in Latin and Ancient Greek but not yet familiar
with epigraphy.
- American Academy
in Rome – The AAR offers
a number of programs every summer, foremost of which is the venerable

- American School
of Classical Studies at Athens – The
ASCSA offers its summer school every year. (*deadline for 2007

- Of interest also is the volunteer
program managed by ASCSA for the ongoing excavations in the Athenian
