92nd Anniversary Meeting of the CAMWS Southern Section

Pack your bags for beautiful Tallahassee, FL!!! CAMWS-SS will meeting in Tallahassee at the invitation of Florida State University sometime in November 2012. We are having to work around the Florida St. home football schedule, so as soon as we can confirm dates, they will be posted here and a message sent out to all members. Sorry for the delay, but ACC football is big in Tallahassee, so they have the right of way!

Nota Bene: The Call for Papers will have the usual June 1 deadline.

The 90th anniversary meeting of the Southern Section of CAMWS took place on October 28-30, 2010, at the invitation of the University of Richmond and in conjunction with the Centennial Meeting of the Classical Association of Virginia. The Richmond Omni Hotel hosted the meetings.

For further information on the activities of the Southern Section, contact T. Davina McClain (mcclaind@nsula.edu), the Secretary-Treasurer.

Presidential Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper

Beginning in 2008, the Southern Section of CAMWS has awarded the Presidential Award for the Outstanding Graduate Student Paper at its biennial meeting. Eligible are graduate students whose paper is accepted on the program and who will not have received their Ph.D. by the time it is read. The award (with a prize of $200) is presented at the business meeting, even though the winner might not yet have read it by the time of the meeting.

There are two criteria for evaluation: (1) the quality of the scholarly argument, including the importance of the topic, the originality of the treatment, and the quality of mind displayed; (2) the effectiveness of an oral presentation, including the quality of the writing, good organization, and interest to an audience. Any graduate student whose abstract has been accepted may submit a complete text of the paper for consideration for this award.

Those wishing their papers to be considered for this award should submit their completed paper to Mary Pendergraft no later than midnight October 15, 2010. Papers should be sent via email, but may be sent via post or fax (see below), provided that an electronic version of the paper is also provided. It is best to send it via email in PDF format.
