I.  Hotel Information

Rooms have been reserved at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis and the Fogelman Executive Conference Center.  NB:  Reservations must be received by 3PM September 29th,  2006.  The Holiday Inn is across the street from Fogelman and is the place where breakfasts and other unsponsored meals will be available. Sessions will be held in the Fogelman Center.

All the rooms at the Holiday Inn are suites; they have either a king size bed or two doubles.  The facility was just built in 2002.  Conference attendees have been guaranteed a rate of $99.00 per night excluding tax (13.5%).  Call (901)678-8200 or 1-800-HOLIDAY to make reservations at the Holiday Inn.  Identify yourself as a member of Classical Association of the Middle West and South to obtain the guaranteed rate.

All the rooms at the Fogelman Center are furnished with one queen-size bed.  Conference attendees have been guaranteed a rate of $85.00 per night excluding tax (13.5%).  Call (901)678-5410 to make reservations at the Fogelman Center.  Identify yourself as a member of Classical Association of the Middle West and South to obtain the guaranteed rate.  NB:  Reservations must be received by 3PM September 29th,  2006.

II.  Travel Information

Memphis International Airport

The Memphis International Airport is served by most major airlines and is a Northwest hub.  Since FedEx is based in Memphis, the airport has taken on the title "#1 Cargo Airport in the World."  The most economical way to get to Memphis is to send yourself by FedEx.

For other options, consult the following airlines:

The Holiday Inn provides complimentary airport shuttle service through advance reservations ONLY.  If you need transportation from the airport, you must call 901-678-8200 at least 48 hours in advance of your arrival.  The shuttle will pick you up outside of the baggage claim area in the area designated for "Hotel" pick up.  The hotel shuttle van is white and marked "Holiday Inn – University of Memphis".  Please be aware the hotel does not schedule a shuttle driver unless they have received prior indications that an airport pick up has been requested.  When shuttle service is provided, it is available between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. only.

It is a short cab ride from the airport to the hotels and should cost about $20.

Amtrak

Memphis is served by the famous City of New Orleans line.  Trains arrive daily from the north in the morning at 6:30 a.m. and from the south at night at 10 p.m.

Driving Directions:

I-40 from Nashville:

DO NOT EXIT at I-40/240 North or I-240 South.  Continue straight on Sam Cooper Blvd. to Highland St. exit; turn left.  Follow Highland St. to Central Ave.; turn left.  Follow Central through two traffic lights: turn left into the Holiday Inn driveway.  For the Fogelman Executive Conference Center follow Central to Innovation Dr.; turn right.  The FECC is on your left.

I-55 South from Mississippi:

From I-55, take I-240 East.  Follow I-240 East to exit 20B, Getwell Rd. N.  Follow Getwell until it ends at Park Ave.  Turn right on Park.  Take Park to first traffic light, then turn left onto Goodlett.  Follow Goodlett to Central Ave., which is the second traffic light; turn left.  Follow Central through two traffic lights; turn right into the Holiday Inn driveway. For the Fogelman Executive Conference Center follow Central to Innovation Dr.; turn left.  The FECC is on your left.

I-55 and I-40 West from Arkansas:

Follow I-40 East over the Hernando Desoto Bridge to I-240 South, follow to 1-240 East (Nashville).  Take I-240 East to exit 20B, Getwell Rd. N. Follow Getwell until it ends at Park Ave., turn right on Park.  Go to the first traffic light and turn left onto Goodlett.  Follow Goodlett to Central Ave., which is the second traffic light; turn left.  Follow Central Ave. through two traffic lights: turn right into the Holiday Inn driveway. For the Fogelman Executive Conference Center follow Central to Innovation Dr.; turn left.  The FECC is on your left.

Parking

For those staying at the Holiday Inn, parking is available in the hotel lot.  For those staying at the Fogelman Center, parking is free in the garage next to the hotel.  For those not staying at these hotels, $3 day passes for parking in the Fogelman garage will be available at registration.

III.  Friday Afternoon at Rhodes College

Friday afternoon sessions will be hosted on the campus of Rhodes College.  Buses will depart from the hotel/conference center at 11:45-12:00 for those attending the Tennessee Classical Association Luncheon and at1:00PM for those attending paper sessions.  Buses will return from Rhodes to the hotel/conference center at 5:45-6:30PM. 

If you want to drive from The University of Memphis to Rhodes:

Follow Central Ave west to East Parkway.  (You will pass the Liberty Bowl on the left and note Christian Brothers University on your right at the corner of Central and E. Parkway.)  Turn right on to E. Parkway; follow it past Overton Park and turn left on to North Parkway.  Rhodes will be on the right after a few blocks.  Turn on to University Ave., and use the University Ave. entrance.  There are several parking lots for visitors; parking is free of charge.

IV.  Special Events

  1. Wednesday evening film at Rhodes:  Achilles a short animated (claymation) film by Barry Purves.  The Trojan War is interpreted through a love affair between Achilles and Patrocles.  The discussion to follow will be led by Rebecca Resinski of Hendrix College.  8 p.m. in Frazier-Jelke Hall,  Room B.  Please sign-up at registration if you would like transportation to Rhodes.  (NB:  the film contains sexually-explicit material.)
  2. 5:30-7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2:  The Art Museum at the University of Memphis will be open for conference participants.  The museum's collection includes a permanent exhibit of Egyptian antiquities maintained by the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology.  There is no charge for the museum; a reception will be included.
  3. Tennessee Classical Association Luncheon:  at Rhodes, Friday, 11/3, 12:14 p.m. -1:45p.m., in Hyde Hall of the Burrow Refectory.  $15. Susan Ford Wiltshire of Vanderbilt University will be the speaker.
  4. Reception at Rhodes College on Friday following the sessions in Crain Lobby of the McCallum Ballroom in the Bryan Campus Life Center.
  5. The Friday Evening Banquet (7:30PM-9:30PM) will feature CAMWS-SS President, Jane E. Phillips' Presidential Address, "What Has Rome to do with Jerusalem?  The Prince of Humanists Rewrites the Gospels." 
    The menu offers a choice of entrees--Tennessee Bourbon Loin of Beef, Pan-fried Catfish, or Pasta Primavera (vegetarian)—complemented by Belgian endive salad, rice pilaf, and honey-glazed carrots and for dessert, a choice of lemon mist cake or Mississippi mud pie.  $35.
    A Cash Bar will be available beginning at 7:00PM.
  6. Networking Luncheon sponsored by the Women's Classical Caucus and Lambda Classical Caucus at the U of M Holiday Inn on Saturday, at 12:00.  $10.
  7. Trip to the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS:  Saturday from 11:00AM-6PM.  $35.  Cost includes transportation, lunch, admission to Rowan Oak (home of William Faulkner) and The University Museums, including the Robinson Collection. NB:  the trip from Memphis to Oxford takes about 1 and 1/2 hours.
