CAMWS Southern Section

2008 - Call for Papers

The 88th Meeting of CAMWS-Southern Section will be held Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 13-15, 2008, at the Doubletree Biltmore Hotel, at the invitation of the University of North Carolina-Asheville. Proposals for panels and individual papers are now being accepted. All proposals must be received by June 1, 2008.

Papers and panels may be on any aspect of Graeco-Roman antiquity; especially welcome are panels likely to be of broad interest, including those concerned with pedagogy. Teachers and students of the Classics at any level of instruction (K-12, college, or university) may submit abstracts.

Individual papers

Only one proposal for an individual paper may be submitted per person. The title but not the author's name or any other identifying marks, should appear on the abstract. An abstract for an individual paper may be submitted either electronically or by mail; electronic submissions are preferred. For electronic submissions, go to http://www. camws. org/membership/abstractform. php. To submit an abstract by mail, send 1 hard copy of the submission form along with 1 hard copy of a typed, 1-page (= one side of a sheet of paper) abstract. A person who submits an abstract for an individual paper may also organize or participate in a panel.

Panels

Only one panel proposal may be submitted per organizer. The panel description should include the panel's title but not the names of the organizer(s) or panelists. The abstract for each paper in the panel should include the title of the paper, along with the panel's title but not the author's name. Panel proposals may be submitted either electronically or by mail; electronic submissions are preferred. For electronic submissions, please combine the panel description and the individual abstracts into one document http://www. camws. org/membership/panelabstract. php. To submit a panel proposal by mail, send 1 hard copy of the submission form, 1 hard copy of a typed, 1-page (= one side of a sheet of paper) panel description, and 1 hard copy of a typed, 1-page abstract for each presentation.

The usual length for a paper is 15 minutes, but 20 minutes may be requested if the talk is illustrated with slides, transparencies, VHS tapes, DVD's, or PowerPoint. Most panels are allotted 90 minutes (some may be allotted 120 minutes, depending on the number of submissions), accommodating 3 to 5 presentations with time for questions. Be sure to note whether you will need audiovisual equipment. Because equipment rentals are expensive, please request equipment only when absolutely necessary; individuals must provide their own computers.

All presenters and organizers are required to be members of CAMWS at the time the abstracts are submitted. You may either pay by check and mail your dues, along with a CAMWS membership form, or pay by credit card (with $3. 00 processing fee): http://www. camws. org/membership/memberinfo. php. Early submissions are encouraged.

Proposals that are mailed should be sent to this address: CAMWS, Department of Classics, St. Olaf College, 1520 St. Olaf Ave. , Northfield, MN 55057-1098; 507-786-3387; fax 507-786-3732; groton@stolaf. edu.

RECEIPT DEADLINE: June 1, 2008 (panels and individuals)

Presidential Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper

Beginning in 2008, the Southern Section of CAMWS will award the Presidential Award for the Outstanding Graduate Student Paper at its biennial meeting. Eligible are graduate students whose paper is accepted on the program and who will not have received their Ph.D. by the time it is read. The text of the oral talk is submitted at least one month in advance of the meeting. The award is presented at the business meeting, even though the winner might not yet have read it by the time of the meeting.

There are two criteria for evaluation: (1) the quality of the scholarly argument, including the importance of the topic, the originality of the treatment, and the quality of mind displayed; (2) the effectiveness of an oral presentation, including the quality of the writing, good organization, and interest to an audience. Any graduate student whose abstract has been accepted may submit a complete text of the paper for consideration for this award.

Those wishing their papers to be considered for this award should submit their completed paper to T. Keith Dix no later than midnight October 17, 2008. Papers should be sent via email, but may be sent via post or fax (see below), provided that an electronic version of the paper is also provided. It is best to send it via email in PDF format.
